So! After text exchanges, phone calls, and a couple of well attended family councils we have plans upon which the company have reached a consensus, and we even have motel reservations for stopping points between Phoenix and Lubbock. The trip out
We have selected the northern route, using I-40 to cross New Mexico and get into Arizona. Among other things, this takes us through territory settled in the 19th century by Grandpa Randy’s Hance ancestors on his paternal grandmother’s side. Leaving Sunday afternoon, we make Albuquerque in about five hours or so, where we have five rooms reserved at the Rodeway Inn East, 13031 Central Ave., N.E. Monday we have about 7 hours worth of driving across the rest of New Mexico. In Arizona, we pass the Petrified Forest National Park just before heading south at Holbrook on Route 77 to Phoenix.

The trip back
Wednesday morning we head east on the southern route to White’s City, NM, which is at the base of the cannon road that heads up to Carlsbad Caverns. White’s City is about 20 miles west of Carlsbad. We will take the kids through Carlsbad Caverns Thursday morning, then drive home in the afternoon. Once again, we have five rooms at a Rodeway Inn.
